Brenda Asiimwe Daisy is my name and I am a fashion designer from Uganda currently working as an industrial designer in Norway with Fretex Redesign west Norway, which is owned by the Salvation Army. Before I came to Norway which was on the 9th of February 2011 I was running a small-scale fashion business, solely owned by me and with me as the sole employee, at my home.
I am now part of a Norsk Form Project called Design without Borders that facilitates the exchange of designers between the south (in my case Uganda) and Norway and is funded by Fredskopset Norway. Fretex Redesign has a partnership with Norsk form and Makerere University Uganda from which I graduated about 2 years ago. The main aim of this exchange is to break social, economic, political religious and geographic borders so as to create one big family of designers with the common aim of contributing towards a better and more sustainable international society through design.
I am therefore here, as designer from Uganda, breaking geographic and cultural boundaries to contribute to and learn more about sustainable design. I really think Fretex Redesign is the best avenue for this because redesign is sustainability in the making. So, join me on this experience coz am sure it going to be very interesting.

Sounds great. I’m interested in working with used fabrics in my designs as well. Do you talk about that on your blog? Where???
Well, I haven’t written about used fabrics in particular(at list not yet) but I usually look for second hand fabrics in vintage shops, good will shops and outdoor markets which are very popular in my home country, Uganda.
I have to say though that my most satisfactory source of fabric is old garments like scarves, skirts, men’s clothing and upholstery fabrics like table cloths. I buy them really cheap and make cool stuff from them.
This is really interesting. I would like to interview you about how to make cloth making more sustainable. Can I send you an email with a few questions?
Sounds like a wonderful idea. The idea of reusing fabric from old garments is great – taking something old and making it new. I wish you much success.
